An Ayurvedic Breakfast: Starting the Day in Balance

Ayurveda is a system of medicine developed thousands of years ago in India and practiced by millions of South Asians as well as others across the globe. One of its central tenets is that every ingredient has an Ayurvedic quality that helps determine how it can be used within a framework of preventive or curative wellness.

An individual’s ideal Ayurvedic diet is rooted in identifying and then balancing their dominant dosha. The three doshas are pitta, vata, and kapha, and each of these is composed of two out of five elements — air, water, fire, earth, and space.

What Elements Make Up Pitta?

Pitta is a combination of the elements fire and water. When out of balance, people with a dominant pitta dosha may be prone to high blood pressure and indigestion.

To help achieve balance, the Ayurvedic diet recommends limiting spicy and salty foods, while prioritizing cooling, energizing foods.

Serve vegan Sri Lankan Mylk Tea Latte alongside whole wheat toast topped with ripe avocado — Ceylon tea leaves aid digestion while sweet coconut, creamy oats, and fresh avocado offer cooling energy.

What Elements Make Up Vata?

Vata is a combination of the elements air and space. When out of balance, people with a dominant vata dosha may experience fatigue, anxiety, and indigestion. To help achieve balance, the Ayurvedic diet recommends limiting cold, tough foods like raw vegetables and dried fruits, while prioritizing warm, moist foods.

What Elements Make Up Kapha?

Kapha is a combination of the elements earth and water. When out of balance, people with a dominant kapha dosha may be prone to asthma and diabetes. To help achieve balance, the Ayurvedic diet recommends limiting heavy or oily foods like red meat and deep fried foods while prioritizing warming foods and zesty herbs and vegetables.
